Super Smash Bros probably doesn’t ever need to have a crossover fighting game with another franchise, but let’s pretend like it should happen anyway!
I started thinking about this after seeing a post on the Nintendo subreddit asking whether people would like to see a Marvel vs Capcom-esque game featuring Nintendo characters.
I’ve never played Marvel vs Capcom, so I have no idea what that’s about.
BUT I have played Mortal Kombat and I know the ridiculousness that entails. So naturally I started considering a Super Smash Bros/Mortal Kombat crossover. And if you’ve ever played Mortal Kombat vs DC, you’ll know an MK crossover is always an excellent idea.
I’m being facetious here but I really didn’t hate MK vs DC, I thought it was pretty fun for what it was.
I feel like I went completely wild with one of the more absurd ideas I’ve had in a while. It was pretty fun putting all this together, though.
Here we go!
I love Super Smash Bros but I love the way MK plays even more so this is basically going to be played like Mortal Kombat, with specific inputs for combos, special moves, etc.
Just for ease, we’re going to limit the roster to 16 Super Smash Bros fighters and 16 Mortal Kombat fighters.
Basically for this one, I started with the eight original (not including unlockable) characters from Super Smash Bros 64 and then added an additional eight from there. Despite the plethora of other characters from Nintendo and Nintendo-adjacent franchises, I only picked ones that have previously appeared in an SSB game.

Others considered: Luigi, Ice Climbers, Mega-Man, Rosalina
For Mortal Kombat, I took several characters from the first game (although characters overlap so much between games, that it doesn’t really matter when their first appearance was). Then I just picked whoever I like best from subsequent games.

Others considered: Kotal Khan, Cyrax, Erron Black, Reptile, Cassie Cage, Raiden
For the Nintendo fighters, I honestly had a hard time getting up to 16; whereas, for Mortal Kombat, I wanted to keep adding on and found it super difficult to decide on a final roster. I really wanted to add in Erron Black, Kotal and Cassie but I couldn’t decide on characters to eliminate in their place.
To me, when I think of Mortal Kombat games, I think of intricate — and over-the-top — stories, spanning multiple games and retcons. When I think of Super Smash Bros, I don’t … really … think of the plot at all.
So we’re working with a lot of MK lore and a mostly blank slate for SSB. We can do this!
To quote the commercial from a North American commercial for Super Smash Bros 64, “Something’s gone wrong in the happy-go-lucky world of Nintendo!” And that something is an invasion by Shao Khan and the Outworld forces.
I basically just took the most basic part of Mortal Kombat and threw it in here.
“When worlds collide, unsteady alliances must be formed to save each Universe,” per the Mortal Kombat vs DC story mode, works well here too.
I’m really not sure where I’m going with that so if anyone wants to add some backstory to why MK and SSB characters meet up, feel free. I just saw that quote on the Super Smash Bros wiki and felt like I could run with it — well, I jogged with it a little bit, at least.
Obviously there’s a Story Mode because I just came up with that outstanding plot.
Much like MK vs DC, players can pick to fight through either the Mortal Kombat or Super Smash Bros side of the story. But both sides will have the same final boss fight in the form of a Master Hand/Shao Khan team-up (Master Khan? Shao Hand? Master Shao Khan Hand?), which I just now came up with.
Imagine Shao Khan with an absurdly large, white gloved hand.
And then there’ll be a Single Play Mode where the player can choose match-ups with and against any character.
Final Fatality Smash
The ridiculous Finishers are my favorite part of the MK games. I thought about just completely disregarding them completely but then I remembered that Super Smash Bros has Final Smashes, which are kind of similar in a small way, so both sides can have their own special moves.
However, I am going to stick with the Mortal Kombat way of using specific inputs to perform the finishers rather than making it item-based, like requiring the player to get a Smash Ball to use their finishers.
The Final Smashes here were taken from Super Smash Bros Wii U/3DS, while the Fatalities came from Mortal Kombat 9 and Mortal Kombat X, depending on the character.
