How long can a chubby plumber run? Forever, apparently, if Nintendo is to be believed.
Super Mario Run will be released for iPhone and iPad on Dec. 15, Nintendo announced on Tuesday. This marks Mario’s first foray into the land of mobile games.
According to a brief description on the Super Mario Run website, “Mario constantly runs forward, while you time your taps to pull off stylish humps and moves to gather coins and reach the goal!”
In the game, Mario runs forward on his own, but relies on the tap of a single finger to jump over obstacles, avoid enemies, pull of stylish moves, collect coins and reach the flagpole to complete courses.
And Nintendo is so confident that the game will be a success that they’re allowing the full game to be unlocked through a one-time purchase of $9.99.
Although the game can be downloaded, and select content can be accessed for free, paying $9.99 will grant unlimited access to each of the game’s three modes.
Advertised as “A new kind of Mario game that you can play with one hand,” Super Mario Run features three modes for players to choose from, including World Tour, Toad Rally and Kingdom Builder.
If Super Mario Run hits the ground running and is the run away success Nintendo is hoping for, will more mobile gaming titles join him in the app race? (Coming up with some kind of play on ‘run’ for the second half of that sentence was a real struggle.)
